In 1946 the Fred Welton family moved from Burnaby to Whonnock, and from there started the Whonnock Nursery which did wholesale distribution to Vancouver, and in 1949 began floral arrangements. In 1955, the Welton’s opened their retail location in Haney and in 1960 Glenn Welton bought the shop from his parents at the age of 19. Glenn would go on to become very successful and run multiple flower stores in Maple Ridge and Coquitlam. The current location of Maple Ridge Florist has been in operation since 1979 and still creates beautiful floral arrangements to this day. Since 1946 the Maple Ridge Florists have had only three owners!

While this scavenger hunt addresses primarily white settler history, it is important to note that both the Katzie and Kwantlen’s history with this land spans back thousands of years prior to the arrival of European settlers. We would like to acknowledge that each of the places in this scavenger hunt are part of the unceded territories of the Katzie First Nation and the Kwantlen First Nation on which we are lucky enough to work and share this land’s history.
